Saving Our Scottish Regiments
|
In 2004, Geoff Hoon, the Minister of Defence, told the House of Commons that the Scottish Regimental system - an institution which has served our country with distinction for over 250 years - would end. Many of us couldn't believe this supremely stupid and tactless act of betrayal - particularly as the Black Watch was at that very same time, in the middle of an especially dangerous operation to help the Americans take Fallujah (Iraq). Several ex Regimental soldiers decided to try and do something positive and so a Petition to Parliament was launched. Our first signatories were Menzies Campbell MP, (Leader of the Liberal Democrats), Sir Malcolm Rifkind MP (former Minister of Defence) and Alex Salmond MP (Leader of te Scottish Nationalists). 155,000 signatures later, the Petition was taken to Westminster and 10 Downing Street. A pictorial record is shown below.
